I despise the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I truly loathe them.. Despite the fact that they’re competent, if not talented musicians.. I’ve hated them since the first time I encountered them. But enough of that.. “It’s Blitz” is slightly more tolerable than the rest of their work, but that’s because the singles work. And The Yeah Yeah Yeahs usually choose the good song on the album for their single. No exception here.
Points
The Yeah Yeahs have always been a band I’ve wanted to like but have never liked.. Yet somehow “It’s Blitz” is growing on me like a tumor. I’ve hated the Yeah Yeah Yeahs for so long it feels unnatural to like more than a track on a Yeah Yeah Yeahs record.. The two I do like ‘Zero’ and ‘Dragon Queen’, those two songs are actually really good. Fun, sexy little numbers.
Of the many problems I have with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs is for all their bravery, all their innovation.. the best they can do is fit in with a current trend. This time it’s analog-dance infused rock music.. whoop-de-doo. So special, so special it bores me to tears. Karen O. is the only thing remotely unique thing about the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and I hate her voice. She’s been doing a poor Lydia Lunch since “Fever to Tell” and she’s starting to grow out of it but she needs to stop alternating between the rock and roll sex goddess and sensitive woman and pick one already. I really like the musicians behind her.. Brain Chase has synæsthesia and you know what? That’s awesome. He sees colors when he listens to or plays music. And he’s pretty good at playing the drums.. it’s just the Yeah Yeah Yeahs do nothing special with his talent, some for Nick Zimmer. His guest work with other artists reveals him to be hugely talented but he’s the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.. thusly, he’s a bore here.
For all the talent behind this group, it’s astonishing how little good comes out of it.. I’ve been frustrated b y the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and I’ll continue to be frustrated by them because some great musicians are rotting away in this group.. and this saddens me. But it also makes me hate them. I give up.
